Insihaar

‘Insihaar’ is an Arabic word that translates to ‘Fusion’. My heritage is a part of me that I have always wanted to explore in textiles, however, I have never tried to apply my skillset and knowledge to this. I am a British Indian Muslim. I was born in Britain; my parents are from India and my religion is Islam. Therefore, I have used India as inspiration for my colour palette and techniques in combination with having visual research stem from Islamic Art and Architecture. I have also taken inspiration from William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement which originated as a British movement in the late nineteenth century. Therefore, my work creates a fusion of my heritage – a combination of identities that will be relatable to a lot of people and will create timeless pieces for individuals from all walks of life with different backgrounds and cultures.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

I have chosen this goal as India is one of the countries in the developing world that is decelerating in growth rates as labour productivity decreases and unemployment rates rise. One of the causes of this is the lack of need for such skill in the weaving industry due to the popularity of power looms. Moreover, I will be sourcing fair trade organic cotton which promotes increased commitments to agriculture infrastructure to increase productivity and reduce unemployment levels.

Design to Minimise Waste

I aim to minimise the waste that is created in the textile industry by using all the dyed yarn left over from the previous project. Firstly, I aim to achieve this by continuing to weave on the grey warp I have set up on the loom. I will then use the dyed yarns from the previous project to form my second warp which will be an addition either side to the first warp. This allows me to ensure minimal wastage of the yarn I previously dyed, whilst also allowing me to weave with my old and new colour palette, both inspired by India, to show how they complement each other. My third warp will be tied on to the second warp using weaver’s knots which will ensure minimum waste. I would like to produce samples people want to buy, by ensuring they are carefully designed to be relatable to my market. Due to the techniques I will be using, a lot of the final samples will relate to slow design.

Design to Reduce Chemical Impacts

I will ensure appropriate material selection for this project by sourcing organically produced fair trade cotton. Ideally, I would like to source this yarn from India itself, using the links we have established in Bangalore. If this is not possible, I will source yarns locally that are 100% fair trade and organic.

Design that Looks at Models from Nature & History

A lot of the inspiration and information I will be using as a basis for this project comes from studying and reflecting upon nature and textiles. The techniques have been passed down from generation to generation for years, and the visual research derives from Islamic Art and Architecture that are inspired by nature too. I aim to reinvent the use of these techniques in a domestic interiors environment which will provide a fresh look for people’s homes.

Design for Ethical Production

This strategy is all about design that utilises and invests in traditional craft skills and ethical production which supports and values workers’ rights, and the sourcing of fair-trade materials. I hope to fulfil these criteria, as aforementioned, by using traditional weaving techniques and sourcing fair-trade organic cotton.

Design to Reduce the Need to Consume

The basis of this whole project comes from my heritage and what I can relate to as an individual. The idea for this project began as a personal response to the information I was exposed to. I hope to achieve this strategy by making sure my outcomes are products that last, that people will want to buy, keep and look after. Therefore, I did some research before setting this brief to ensure my project is relevant.

              In England and Wales (2011) census:

- 4.8% of population is Muslim

- 67.6% of Muslims are Asian

- 43.4% of population are British Asian Muslims

              In India (2011) census:

- 14.23% of population is Muslim

By conducting this research, I have ensured there is a market out there of individuals who have the same heritage as me or can connect with parts of my background, allowing them to also emotionally connect with the samples I produce. Although I have done this research, I do not wish to limit consumers to being British Asian Muslims, like myself. Hence, John Lewis’ collection affirms there is a market for this project to be relevant, substantial and ‘on trend’ to more individuals.
